EV chargers and home standby generators add significant electrical loads or backup power. Both need planning around service size, dedicated circuits, transfer equipment, and carbon monoxide safety.

Quick facts
QuestionShort answer
What does a home EV charger need?Level 2 chargers typically run on a 240-volt circuit rated from about 20 to 100 amps, and the NEC requires a dedicated circuit sized with a 125 percent continuous-load margin.
What does it cost?Joule's 2026 guide puts an installed Level 2 charger at about $800 to $2,000 all-in, higher when panel work is needed. Get a local quote.
What does a standby generator cost?Standby generator costs vary widely with size and install work, so get a local quote.
When do I need a pro?Always for EV chargers, transfer switches, and standby generators.

EV chargers

A Level 2 charger connects to a dedicated 240-volt circuit and is usually hardwired or plugged into a dedicated receptacle. Charging equipment should be certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory. Panel capacity matters: an open slot does not confirm the service can carry the added load, so a load calculation should come first.

Standby generators

A standby generator connects through a transfer switch that isolates the home from the utility during an outage. Article 702 of the NEC covers permanently installed optional standby systems. Transfer equipment for optional systems is held to fewer requirements than emergency systems, so the quality of the equipment and the installation matter.

Carbon monoxide and generator safety

Generators produce carbon monoxide. CPSC says never use a generator inside homes, garages, crawlspaces, or sheds, even with fans or open doors and windows. Deadly carbon monoxide can build up quickly and linger for hours after the generator shuts off. Keep portable generators outdoors and far from doors, windows, and vents.

Frequently asked questions

Can I plug an EV charger into a regular outlet?

Level 1 chargers can use a standard 120-volt outlet, but Level 2 chargers need a dedicated 240-volt circuit. An electrician can confirm what your home needs.

Can I run a portable generator in the garage with the door open?

No. CPSC says never use a generator in a garage, even with the door open, because carbon monoxide can build up and linger.
